Charles Sumner was a Republican and the senator of Massachusetts. During his career, he fought to free slaves and destroy the Confederacy. After delivering his speech, "The Crime Against Kansas", he got attacked and suffered from brain damage. Throughout his whole life, Sumner continued to fight for the voting rights and full citizenship of African Americans.

John Brown was an abolitionist. He is most famous for leading a group of 21 men, black and white, into Harpers Ferry, Virginia on October 16, 1859. He fought to try and end slavery in many other battles such as the Battle of Black Jack, and the Battle of Osawatomie. All of his attempts were unsuccessful. Brown is believed to have played a major role in the start of the Civil War.

His goal was to make Southerners "so sick of war that generations would pass away before they would again appeal to it." His most famous act was his March to the Sea.
