Letter From a Soldier
Dear Sister,
We have had two great battles and I am yet mercifully spared and almost but not quite ambush on Monday the 19th. I got a bullet in my side which cut a place about as long as my finger and it is deep it is very sore but I have not laid on but part of two days when I rode in an ambulance but am out now. We fought war 12 hours the 19th and won a glorious victory drove the rebels in the greatest confusion from wishes - we captured 5 pieces of artillery 15 stand of wars and about 4500 will and 2500 wounded prisoners. It was one of the greater if not the greatest victory of the war. We lost heavily 2500 to 3000 killed and wounded about 100 in our Rights. I communicated officers that two killed and 5 wounded. Write as love as much as you can and let me hear from you.
Your brother,
Darius

I chose this letter because it gives us a clear insight to the life of a soldier during the Civil War. Darius talks about how he has become "mercifully" spared from a bullet. He talks about how he hasn't rested or laid down, and has continued to do his job and fight through the pain. He also describes the feeling of victory and how great it is. I learned how a soldier lives, the excitements, and other daily things that can happen while serving in the war. I liked this letter because it is simple but you can tell it has a lot of meaning and love behind it.
